It’s official…. a majority of Parsippany’s Council has been appointed

Posted in: Featured, View All Entries by admin on September 14, 2011 | No Comments

As of yesterday evening (Tuesday, September 13th), the majority of Parsippany’s Township Council has now been appointed by the Republican Party.  Paul Carifi was sworn in to fill the seat abandoned by former Council President John Fox – making him the third (out of five) Council members to be appointed.  Fox resigned earlier this month to take a position on the Morris County Board of Elections.

Following his resignation, Fox said, “”This should give a leg up to Paul [Carifi Jr.],” Fox said. “Chances are he’ll be appointed and that will give him a leg up in the [November general] election, so he can run as an incumbent councilman.”  (Quoted from Parsippany Patch)

Our Take

“There is an absurd lack of balance in our town when the majority of the council is appointed by those in power, and not elected by Parsippany.  Today more than ever it’s critical to elect independent voices to Parsippany’s Council — Janice, Tom and I are ready to fill that void and provide much needed balance.”  - Annelise Catanzaro

“The Council’s primary role is serve as checks and balances for the Mayor’s budget and contracting process.  With 3 of 5 council members appointed, it creates a very unhealthy environment for decision-making and I’m concerned we’ll end up with another MCJIF fiasco.”  - Janice McCarthy

“I find it very disconcerting that John Fox will now be serving on the County Board of Elections, especially given the allegations of voter fraud in Parsippany.   Fair elections and making sure every vote is counted (only once!) is critical in our democracy.”   - Tom Wyka

Parsippany Post-Irene — Recovering from the Storm

Posted in: Featured, View All Entries by admin on August 29, 2011 | No Comments

After being hit hard by Hurricane Irene with flooding, power outages, and the release of the Reservoir Dam — this has certainly been a tumultuous weekend for Parsippany, New Jersey and for much of the east coast.    Our hearts go out to those evacuated and those dealing with power outages and flooded homes — and thanks to all those emergency responders and volunteers who helped and are still helping residents in trouble from the storm.

Today the Daily Record reported about voter fraud allegations tied to Parsippany voters.   Specifically, Margaret Nordstrom, the incumbant Republican freeholder – who “unofficially and narrowly lost” to newcomer candidate Hank Lyon — is contesting the results of the Republican Primary Election.  Based on the Daily Record reports, ” …of all the vote-by-mail ballots cast in the county’s GOP primary, 676 or 54.12 percent came from Parsippany.”

Update on Parsippany Road High-Rise

Posted in: Development, Featured, View All Entries by admin on May 17, 2011 | No Comments

Yesterday the Parsippany Planning Board met, heard additional presentations from the property-owner as well as testimony from members of the public who attended to voice their concern about the proposed project.    After more than three hours of testimony, the Planning Board opted to “digest” information presented and testimony from the public and instead make their final recommendation about the rehabilitation zone at their next scheduled meeting — Monday, June 6th at 7pm.

The Project
Although not yet an official re-development proposal, the building as presented would stand at 65 ft high and six stories as compared to the current limit of 35 ft and only two stories.  Additionally, with 50 condominiums in the proposal development, the density would be 39 dwellings per acre, as compared with the currently permitted 12 dwellings per acre.   Many neighbors in and around the proposed development site on 272 Parsippany Road expressed concerns about traffic, aesthetic concerns, loss of privacy (especially for residents in Colonial Heights), and potential implications for drainage and water runoff since many trees will be removed for the project.

Tax Relief?
Additionally, though some including the Mayor and the property-owner made the case that the development would help bring in more rateables and ease the burden on tax payers, after closer consideration — it actually seems that even in a best case scenario the project would either break even or lose money.  Based on the planners projections, the proposed project would bring in an estimated $266,000 in annual tax revenue.  However, with an estimated 8 school age children (at $14,000 per child) and about $5,000 per household for township services (like police, recycling, etc), the town would actually be losing ~$96,000 per year.  Not exactly a relief for tax payers.

Next Steps
Following the June 6th meeting, the Planning Board’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Township Council who will make a final determination about various elements like height and density.  We’ll keep you posted on future meetings that will decide the fate of this project — and potentially set a precedent for dozens of new development sites in the future.

Important Planning Board Mtg TONIGHT-Fate of Parsippany High-Rise

Posted in: Development, Featured, View All Entries by admin on May 16, 2011 | No Comments

Tonight the Parsippany Planning Board will make a decision on a development project that could drastically effect the layout of Parsippany Road and set a precedent for dozens of properties in Parsippany.   This project began this past January, when the Parsippany Township Council voted to declare 272 Parsippany Road as in need of “rehabilitation.”  As such, the developer is in front of the Planning Board requesting a number of variances to build  five-story building with a bank in front  and 50 condominiums set back behind.  This area within throwing distance of three other pre-existing developments — Colonial Heights, Parsippany Gardens and Westgate.

When asked to reduce the size of the building and the number of total units, the developer resisted and said that 50 units is the only way to receive a return on investment.

**Please come to Planning Board Meeting TONIGHT, May 16th at 7:30pm when they will make their final decision on this controversial project.  The meeting will be held at Parsippany Municipal Building - 1001 Parsippany Blvd.
